"Miriam's Song of the Sea"

"Shirat Hayam"

"Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted"

~Exodus 15:20-21

The Bible records that after the Children of Israel escaped a vengeful Pharaoh and his Egyptian chariots by miraculously passing through the Red Sea, also known as the Sea of Reeds, the prophetess Miriam led the Israelite women in song and dance, in celebration of their freedom and in thanks to God. Miriam, Moses' older sister, is the first woman ever to bear the title of prophet, thereby becoming the archetype of the female prophetic tradition.

"I stand at the sea and turn

to face the desert stretching endless and still.

My eyes are dazzledThe sky brilliant blue

Sunburnt sands unyielding white.

My hands turn to dove wings.

My arms reach for the sky and I want to sing the song rising inside me.

~ From Rabbi Ruth Sohn's Poem "Song of Miriam"
